Rafting In Australia

Rafting on the Nymboida River (or Nymbo as it’s known to river guides) is certain to entertain the complete novice as well as experienced white water warriors.

In Australia we are blessed with not only some of the most stunning countryside and rivers in the world, but also some superb white water rafting opportunities. The Tully River up in Cairns is one of the best places in the country for river rafting and Tropical North Queensland also has rafting on the Barron River and in North Johnstone. Over in the west, the Murray River out of Perth offers some incredible landscapes and some serious rapids. The Franklin River in Tasmania is truly stunning and is the ideal place to book a rafting trip which takes you right into the island's haunting wilderness. And don't forget that thanks to the 2000 Olympics, NSW has a world-class white water rafting run at Penrith in the West of Sydney.

In the following sections we will take you through some of the best places to book a rafting trip in Australia and give you a little taste of what you can expect from each location. Australia is an enormous and wildly varied country, so it's worth remembering that rafting on the Mitta Mitta River in Victoria will be totally different to skipping down the Huon River in Tasmania, so why not try out more than one location?

Penrith White Water Rafting

If you are looking to go rafting in NSW, you may think that you’ll have to head miles out of Sydney into a rural area. However, one of the best locations in NSW for white water action is actually the Penrith Whitewater Stadium. This state of the art facility was used during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games for the canoe and kayak slalom events and has since then been popular for water sports such as kayaking and, of course, white water rafting.

White Water Rafting Cairns

Cairns has a reputation as the adventure capital of Australia and certainly it’s tropical climate, long sunny days, seasonal heavy rainfalls and stunning scenery (both on land and out on the Great Barrier Reef) all add up to make it a fantastic place to feed your adrenalin habit.

White Water Rafting Melbourne

If you fancy some white water action out of Melbourne, the best places to try are the King River and Mitta Mitta River, both located outside the city. The Yarra River is closer to the city, but is not really suitable to rafting trips, with white water kayaking your best bet.

White Water Rafting Coffs Harbour

One of the best spots to try white water rafting in NSW is on the Nymboida River out of Coffs Harbour. The Nymboida River (or Nymbo, as the locals call it) cuts an impressive path through the Nymbol-Binderay National Park which lies to the west of Coffs Harbour, about 6 hours north of Sydney. It’s a gorgeous part of the world and riding the famous Nymboida rapids is a fantastic way to see and experience the river in all its majestic beauty.

White Water Rafting Victoria

If you are into white water rafting, Victoria has 2 major draw cards – the Mitta Mitta River and the King River. Both are a scenic drive north of Melbourne itself, taking you out into the beauty and wilderness of Victoria and so giving you a taste of some of the states most breath-taking scenery, as well as the rush of white water action.
